about ky.
ky brutnell builds systems that operate on attention. this is the whole story in one scroll: the schooling, the ledgers, the four companies that taught the market for attention, and the company built to master it. the books that shaped each era surface alongside it.
excellence was the family language.
ky was born in 2001 and raised on the sunshine coast. his mother is a leader in australian primary education; his father coached strength and fitness for australia’s olympic swimmers. today he lives in brisbane, engaged, marrying next year.
the first arena was chess. weekend tournaments, some of them national. strategy got in early and stayed.
the scholarship changed the trajectory.
a test result moved him from his public school to sunshine coast grammar on an academic scholarship, held across his entire primary and secondary schooling. the debt to that school is still open. he graduated in december 2018.
the obsession with words arrived early and never left. adventure novels first. then philosophy, strategy, systems. a brief acting stint along the way sparked a love of videography that pays off later in this story.
money is stored energy.
money is how a society stores its energy, so ky went to learn its grammar. a degree in accounting at the university of queensland: work in japan and you learn japanese; work in business and you learn accounting. the electives ran to quantitative financial analysis and game theory, where the chess years quietly paid their way.
the first professional job was as an accountant at evolveaa. the firm’s director, cameron, took him under his wing and taught him the real work: client relationships. late nights doing sets of financials turned into python scripts that automated them.
then a headhunter called from pitcher partners while he was still at university. a clean, stable career sat right there in front of him. he decided that if he did not leave now, he never would. so he jumped: from accounting into attention economies, and into the data engineering needed to see patterns in behaviour.
financial markets lag attention markets.
the money arrives after the attention. watch how budgets get allocated and the order of operations is obvious: eyeballs move first, revenue follows. in may 2022 ky joined aginic, a brisbane data consultancy, to work the attention side of the ledger.
three months in, the thesis got a live demonstration. mantel group acquired aginic in august 2022. the content cadence had gone from one piece every two months to one every thursday, and the acquisition carried him into the group’s hq marketing team.
an acquisition is a systems test.
at mantel group ky built the lead machine end to end. fifteen webpage copy decks. landing pages built to convert, a google ads campaign for each one, every lead filtered into salesforce with a sales notification on arrival. the whole loop reviewed through ga4 and self-built looker dashboards.
then the stewardship test: hold campaign strategy steady while the incoming cmo onboarded. he documented every live marketing system, handed the machine over clean, and left to study a different attention economy.
education is an attention economy with a long settlement.
at navitas the work was attention at volume: 50,000 sends a month. omni-channel student journeys in salesforce marketing cloud. email assets in raw html and css. value propositions across 25 university disciplines.
the scholarship system proved the loop. advertise scholarships, then retarget every applicant who missed out. the funnel fed steady organic traffic to university psychology pages, and the first article under its seo plan settled in as the site’s most-read piece.
b2b attention is a different market.
six months at esri australia completed the map. geospatial software, partner ecosystems, deals that move through relationships and rooms rather than feeds. b2b attention has its own physics. it was the last market ky wanted to see from the inside.
the next company was already taking shape. with his employer’s blessing, the evenings went to building what would become navigateengine. night after night, until he fell asleep. then one day it was time to go all in.
navigateengine is the thesis, shipped.
navigateengine launched in 2025: a brisbane performance media agency that built its own software platform inside its first year. the ne board gives operators the tools to audit and improve their own marketing.
every attention asset serialises to json. the platform standardises an advertising estate into schemas, runs thousands of checks a day on current versus goal state, and closes the gaps: a permanent diagnostic and remediation layer where an agency used to be. the creative studio widened the scope from management to production. the work has reached a few million australian screens.
